Cult of the Dead Cow

Cult of the Dead Cow (cDc) is a long-lived hacktivist organization whose motto is “global domination through media saturation.” The group has been actively involved in struggles for digital freedom in places like China, Iraq, and the United States. The cDc has also developed several software tools including Torpark (a portable web browser that can be used for anonymous web surfing) and Six/Four System (a system for protecting communication networks against censorship). The group’s institutional page is a treasure trove of cDc hacker text files, hacking-related music, and cdc-branded merchandise. Although the group positions itself as a socially constructive organization, its activities have generated plenty of controversy. For example, the newscaster Geraldo Rivera once described the cDc as a “bunch of sickos.”
